A Champion Racehorse & Sire
Armbro Goal, who came in our training in December after his 2-year old season, was a $125,000 yearling purchase at Tattersalls. Owned at the time by Jim Plate & Assoc., he won 3 out of 5 races at two getting a record of 1:59.4. By Speedy Crown out of Armbro Flight, Armbro Goal is of Royal birth. His sire is the great Speedy Crown, the "Sire of Sires" in North America, and his sons, grandsons and daughters are enriching the breeding in all the major trotting countries of the World. His dam Armbro Flight was one of the toughest racemares ever who competed against and beat the best colts and horses of her time, including Noble Victory and Roquepine, the latter in the Roosevelt International in an unforgettable finish. Armbro Goal showed great promise during the winter training in Florida, and we knew we had a good horse on our hands. He made his first major start as a 3-year old in the Canadian Trotting Classic, which he won in 1:57.3. After that he won the Beacon Course in a new race-record 1:54.4 he was purchased by KG Bertmarks Hingstdepå AB, who later syndicated 50%. In the Hambletonian that year (1988) he had no competition, winning it in two straight heats 1:54.4 and 1:54.3. After the Hambo he went on to win the World Trotting Derby, and was the favorite to win the Kentucky Futurity. But it was not to be. One week prior to the race he was diagnosed with pneumonia, and had to rest for at least 3 months. The decision was then taken to retire him to stud-duty.
For us Armbro Goal is indeed a special horse. |
